Officially designated one of Massachusetts cultural districts, Central Square’s growth is characterized by the waves of immigration it saw in its early days. Vast ranges of people can be seen in the streets of Central Square, and its storefronts are largely owned by immigrants or the children of immigrants. Proof of this can be seen in its multitude of restaurants- many of which have won accolades and awards for their rich flavors. Often considered “Downtown Cambridge”, Central Square is home to a main MBTA red line station, Cambridge City Hall, and the Cambridge Post Office. Recently, multiple startups (particularly pharmaceutical and tech- centered ones) have started to move into the Central Square region
Harvard Square is a plaza at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Brattle Street, in the heart of Cambridge. Right next to Harvard Square is the Harvard Yard, and the square thus has a distinct college town character as the commercial center for Harvard University with iconic red brick lining the streets. It is easily accessible by the MBTA Red Line’s Harvard stop. Nearby is the JFK Memorial Park, the Cambridge Common, and the original birthplace of Newe Towne, which is what Cambridge was originally known as. There are several cafes, eateries, and shops in Harvard square with old and new character alike.
